Job Description
The Counseling Program in the School of Education at Drake University is CACREP accredited with specializations in clinical mental health, school, and rehabilitation counseling. The Counseling Program consists of four full time faculty and about ten adjunct faculty. The program is stable and collegial with the same four core faculty for the past seventeen years. Due to a retirement, the faculty are excited to embark upon this search for a new member of our tight knit team. The mental health counseling specialization is particularly popular among students, driving high interest in the program and strong enrollment numbers. The Counseling Program has been fully enrolled with students for the past fifteen years.
Nearly all courses are offered in a face-to-face format, serving a working adult population. Most classes meet weekly in the evening with some classes offered on three weekends during the term. Faculty have strong, collaborative relationships with students, each other, and the community.
The program has a strong and ongoing commitment to diversity and social justice. The program completed an equity audit in 2021 resulting in new and revised expectations in courses, a new framework for students and faculty to approach and understand oppression, and new expectations for how students and faculty communicate with and treat each other in class.
The program strives to be innovative and to position students for success upon graduation. As an example, the program offers students the opportunity to complete EMDR certification prior to graduation. Elective classes also offer faculty opportunities to connect their research and areas of interest to working with students.
