Spending time outdoors is one of Jake’s favorite ways to recharge, and the 800+ miles of recreational trails in the DSM region makes it easy to do just that. Whether he’s biking, walking or running, there’s always a new path to explore. Along the way, fun stops, like art installations, breweries or coffee shops, turn time on the trail into an adventure.  

When he’s not on the trails, you’ll likely find Jake grabbing a beer at one of the region's local breweries. From West Hill Brewing Company in Indianola to Firetrucker in Ankeny and Confluence Brewing Company (Jake’s personal favorite) in Des Moines, there’s no shortage of cool brews to try. Be sure to check each brewery’s calendar for weekly events like bingo, discounted beverages, food truck appearances and more.  

Festivals are a big part of what makes DSM so vibrant, and Jake never misses a chance to head to Downtown DSM for the fun. Events like the World Food & Music Festival, a three-day celebration of international cuisine, cultural activities, live performances and global beverages, and the Des Moines Arts Festival, one of the world’s most prestigious art festivals, take place in the heart of downtown, drawing in thousands each year.
